Springport Mid-Michigan Speedway Hosts Record Car Count for Annual Michigan Cup

SPRINGPORT, MI - Multiple feature winners were crowned over the course of Michigan Cup weekend at Springport Mid-Michigan Speedway between the six divisions. However, one driver left the weekend as the biggest of them all.
Matthew Elsey Jr won two different A-Features on Sunday afternoon, but it was the Modified feature that had people talking. After starting seventh in the 50 lapper, he worked his way to the lead just after halfway and led the rest of the way, but it was far from a Sunday drive. He was tasked with multiple restarts over the final 20 laps, nearly all of which with one of the best in the state right next to him in Brian Bergakker. He went on to collect his first-career Modified win and first feature win in a V8 racecar over Alex Donnert and Bergakker.
His first feature win earlier in the afternoon was a much more familiar sight. Known for his dominance in the Compact ranks, he started 24th and drove his way through the field to win the Port Stock A-Feature over Nicholas Hard and Jerime Damron. The victory came with a bit of good fortune – a yellow flag erased a half-lap lead for Hard and Elsey was able to complete the pass with six laps to go to win.
In other feature action, Matt Maurer brought out his Late Model Sportsman for the first time in 2026 and scored the A-Feature win after a spirited battle with Russell’s M40 Speedway Street Stock track champion Eric McGlothlen. Andrew Rutherford started shotgun on the field and won the Street Stock A-Feature over Jeff Ganus and Austin Maynard. Jerry Pierman survived a big wreck early to win the Limited Late Model feature over fast qualifier Chet Monaweck. Michael Sullins won the first-ever Crown Vic feature over Galesburg Speedway Street Stock champion Bo Brady.
B-Features kicked off Sunday afternoon with Chance Madarik (LM Sportsman), Rob Newman (Street Stocks), and Elston Flemming Jr (Port Stocks) picking up wins. Walt Obrinske III and Tyler Hufford won Modified Last Chance races.
Saturday’s racing action saw heat races galore, but also alphabet soup features for Port Stocks and a Street Stock C-Feature. Marcus Starnes won the Street Stock C-Feature, while Rylee Miller (E-Feature), Chris Smith (D-Feature), and Galesburg Speedway FWD B champion Braydyn Loop (C-Feature) won Port Stock features.
