(OREGON, WISCONSIN) – Normally, the driver who wins an ASA STARS National Tour event starts in the top 10. That was not the case as the front two drivers in the Capital 200 presented by Appalachian Sucker Punch. Both came from the seventh row on the starting grid at Madison International Speedway to post a one-two finish.
When the flag flew at the end of 200 laps, it was Kyle Steckly (Milverton, ON) coming from 14th to score his second-career win in the ASA STARS National Tour. Steckly won the Redbud 400 at Anderson back in 2024.
In addition to winning the event, Steckly won the Hard Charger Award, a $500 bonus put up by Port City Race Cars.
Steckly never really had to contend with ASA STARS Tour front man Carson Brown (New London, NC), who had won three of the first four races. Brown started on the inside of Steckly, but suffered some damage making his way forward. Brown got to the podium before the end of segment two, but Steckly went around all of them to gain the lead on lap 139 after fresh tires were bolted on for the final segment.
While Steckly drove away, Ty Majeski (Seymour, WI) battled with Brown for a second-straight race. After 20 laps of battling, Brown pulled ahead, and Majeski would hold on for a third-place finish.
Behind the front three, Ty Fredrickson (Webster, MN) finished fourth, and Derek Thorn (Bakersfield, CA) was fifth.
The evening started with Luke Fenhaus (Wausau, WI) capturing the Hamke Racecars Pole award. Fenhaus became the fifth driver to win the honor this season. Fenhaus could not hold off rookie Tristian McKee, who jumped to the point on the opening lap of the event.
McKee held the point through the first two segments and looked to be poised for his first ASA STARS National Tour win, but the fresh tires saw him fade on the restart as Majeski grabbed the lead on lap 130. McKee finished sixth after a long run after the second segment.
Seventh to tenth saw Penn Sauter, LeVon Van Der Geest, Isaac Kitzmiller and Austin Nason.
The STARS of the ASA STARS National Series will have a few weeks off before their next race at Newport Speedway in Newport, Tennessee. The July 25th event will be the series’ second stop at the high banked track.
